Current US Hemp Legislation: There is hemp legislation pending in many states in the US.
North Dakota Might be the first state to grow hemp. State Representative and farmer, David Monson (Rep) was granted the first license in the US to grow Industrial Hemp since the 1930's. The DEA will now decide if this is a good idea, or will continue to disperse their parenial pretzel logic about this wonderful plant and deny the license.
California: Bill AB 1147 was vetoed in November 2006, by Gov.Swarzenegger. He had spoken about the bill in a positive light with the HIA, and the Hemp Industries Assn. thought that he might sign the legislation, making it legal for California farmers to grow industrial hemp. The DEA, in this case would not have jurisdiction over the bill. The hemp industry will re-introduce the bill in Summer, 2007. We believe that the governor will sign the legislation.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of the HIA (Hemp Industries Association), Assemblymen Mark Leno (D San Francisco), and Chuck Devore (R Newport Beach), co-authors of the bill, growing industrial hemp in California may become a reality. The legalization of industrial hemp is truly becoming a non-partisan issue.
